bell trained

So we had this brilliant idea that we wanted to "bell train" Ollie.  In other words we would teach him to ring a bell to let us know that he needed to go outside to take care of business.  So a while back we bought this bell that looks like a teacher bell, or one of those bells on the desk at a hotel that tell you to ring it for service.  We have been persistant about making sure that we have Ollie hit the bell with his paw before we take him out.  This weekend Ollie really picked up on it and would hit the bell every time he needed to go outside.  If he did this successfully, we would give him a whole treat as opposed to the partial one we give him for just hitting the pad.  So Sunday afternoon Rob & Jeremey were sitting downstairs playing a game and they heard the bell....went up, let Ollie out, success, treat, and returned to game.  A couple minutes later Ollie rings the bell, Rob went up let Ollie out and success, treat, return to game.  Obviously we didn't wait long enough the first time.  So about 5 min. later guess what?  yep...bell rings,  Ollie is standing at his gate waiting for someone to come up....this time he doesn't have to go, but he has figured out that everytime he rings his bell....someone comes.  So I guess you can say that Ollie has successfully bell trained us!  Brilliant idea backfired!!!
